Good lighting is more than a single bulb on the ceiling. It is built in layers: general light, mood light and task light. Here is how to do it, room by room.
Key guidelines
- Colour temperature: 2700 K for warm, relaxing light (living room, bedroom), 3000 K for neutral light (kitchen, home office).
- Above a table: the bottom of the pendant 70–80 cm above the tabletop. The pendant’s diameter should be about half the table’s width, or use two or three pendants in a row for a long table.
- In a walkway: at least 2.10 m between the floor and the bottom of the light.
The living room
Use several sources: a pendant or ceiling light for the whole room, a table lamp by the sofa for reading, a wall light to highlight a wall or a painting. With light points at different heights, the room feels warmer and larger.
The bedroom
Choose soft, indirect light. Two bedside lamps or two wall lights on either side of the bed create a symmetrical, calming frame. A paper or fabric pendant gives a very enveloping glow.
Kitchen and dining room
The pendant above the table is the centrepiece: it sets the tone. Glass, travertine or metal add character, while under-cabinet lighting illuminates the worktop.
Entryway and hallway
This is the first impression of your home. A sculptural wall or ceiling light, paired with a portrait-format painting, is enough to turn a simple passage into a welcoming space.
